Men and women suffering from hair loss may now have a drug-free option for re-growing their hair that’s as simple to use as a hairbrush.
The hand-held HairMax LaserComb, manufactured by Lexington International in Boca Raton, Fla., recently received approval from the Food and Drug Administration.
Federal recognition is something that Hair Loss Control Clinic (HLCC) President Bill Blatter has been waiting for since 2001.
“We are very excited about the major milestone in hair care and science. Laser hair therapy is the talk of the hair-restoration industry today. And not only were the results of this study extremely significant, but with the credibility of the FDA clearance, it will have a substantial impact in the emerging hair restoration industry,” he said Wednesday from his office at 4 Avis Drive in Latham.
According to Blatter, as many as 50 million men and 30 million women suffer from hair loss. Women comprise 60 percent of the HLCC client base.
Blatter has been acting as a consultant with Lexington International. He founded HLCC 19 years ago and has been using lasers to stimulate hair growth on his clients for 14 years. HLCC’s therapies are safe and medically-based, he said.
“Today’s laser technology is 400 to 500 times better than what used to be available. We were the first in the area to use lasers and imported
our clinical lasers from Italy,” Blatter said.
Even primitive laser hair therapy was marginally successful at re-growing hair for some people, he said.
The laser comb can work independent of drug and herbal therapies. A low-level laser beam stimulates the scalp and increases its number of thick hairs, claimed Blatter.

There were 3,500 studies conducted over 25 years with overwhelmingly positive results, he said
“The clinical study concluded that 93 percent of the participants (ages 30 to 60) using the HairMax LaserComb re-grew thick, dense hair over a six-month period,” Blatter said.
Prices for the laser comb range from $349 to $545. A hand-held, rechargeable comb with one laser diode split into nine beams costs $545. Laser combs that pack more of a punch are also available, as are higher-powered clinic lasers.
In-clinic visits supplemented with laser combs, drug and herbal therapies used at home are what he recommends for maximum hair growth.
Not everyone regards the FDA approval as a product endorsement.
“FDA-approval refers to the product’s safety not its efficacy,” said Dr. Michael Beehner, a hair transplant surgeon at the Saratoga Hair Transplant Center in Saratoga Springs.
Long-term benefits of using the product haven’t yet been proven, he said.
“There is some evidence that it’s successful in a small percent of people but those I’ve talked to who have gotten the comb are still coming to me for hair,” Beehner said.
Beehner admitted his own bias may unfairly influence his views about the laser comb.
“It seems as though the laser does stimulate the hair’s growth cycle for about four to six years. It has a sort of burst effect on the blood vessels.”
Criticism from hair-transplant surgeons is largely due to the fact that the product’s efficacy is based on results derived from too few studies, Beehner said.

If you are unhappy with your thinning hair, perhaps it is time to consider some techniques to hide your hair loss. Whether you are a man or a woman losing hair due to heredity, stress, medication or a medical condition you can use these tips to help you cope.
Blow-dry your Hair
If your hair is thinning on top, consider blow drying it when you get out of the shower to give it added texture and body to give your head more coverage. Brush it into a quiff on the top of your head by brushing it from the forehead up. Secure the style with just a little bit of hairspray. If your hair is simply thinning throughout, this is a good way to make your hair look fuller.
Get a Buzz Cut
Actors, sports stars and businessmen alike all utilize the buzz cut as a way to hide the fact that they are losing hair. It is a popular and nowadays classy style that is easy to maintain. Purchase a wet-dry electric razor to groom your scalp daily and remove the hairs you have left for a clean look. A close to the scalp cut for women can be a beautiful way to accentuate your facial features if you have a head shaped for it.

Consider a Natural Wig or Hairpiece
A hairpiece that is made of human hair is your best bet if you choose to hide your hair loss with an old-fashioned wig or hairpiece. Choose something that is close to your natural hair color and texture, and try to match and blend it in with the hair you still have, like sideburns or facial hair.
Weave Extensions into your Hair
Extensions are an easy way for women and men with long thick hair to hide the fact that they are losing some. Call a few hair salons and get some quotes on getting natural human hair added to your hair for more hair that will last for several weeks to several months.
Purchase Fashionable Hats
Hats are always in style, and if you have many hat options people will tend to think you are a hat aficionado instead of assuming you are losing your hair. Keep a few baseball caps and beanies around for relaxing. Buy a fedora or two for style and purchase a few casual hats for variations.
Use a Hair Thickening Shampoo or Conditioner
Purchase a hair thickening shampoo or conditioner meant to help hide loss by making the hair appear to be thicker. Brush hair gently after shampooing and conditioning to prevent losing more hair, and allow hair to dry thoroughly before combing or brushing it.

The hairdressers at Esther’s Haircutting Studio in Tarzana, California were locking their doors for the night last Friday when a cavalcade of cars drew up outside. Britney Spears jumped out of one of the vehicles and, accompanied by her bodyguards, marched into the salon.

When owner Esther Tognozzi refused to shave off the pop star’s hair, Britney took hold of the clippers and removed her locks herself. As Spears cut, inevitably, she was snapped by the paparazzi who have faithfully recorded her journey from teenage stardom into an increasingly troubled adulthood.

Everyone deals with loss in different ways over different lengths of time. Most people eventually learn to cope with their loss and move on with their lives. Researchers have found, however, that some people can really “die of a broken heart.” In a study published in The New England Journal of Medicine, investigators describe a group of 18 women and one man who developed signs of a heart attack after experiencing a sudden emotional shock, like the death of a spouse. A few of the patients had a history of heart problems. Diagnostic tests ruled out heart attack as a cause of the symptoms and no signs of heart damage could be found. Yet, at least five of the patients would have died without treatment.

The researchers say the overwhelming stress caused the patients to release excessive amounts of stress hormones, which can be toxic to the heart. The high levels of stress hormones temporarily stunned the heart muscle and caused symptoms of a heart attack.
Many people go to spas to unwind, release stress and relax. The Lamar Everyday Spa in Scottsdale, AZ is now offering special services, called the “I Will Survive” package. It’s designed specifically for women and men trying to get over a relationship loss - whether through separation, divorce or death. Heidi Lamar, owner of spa, says the service enables clients to release some of the emotional baggage associated with the loss and ready themselves to “move on.” Spa services are selected with the needs of clients in mind. Yoga helps restore the spirit. A hot stone massage reminds a client of survival through a “fiery ordeal,” yet relaxes and calms the body. There is an algae wrap designed to detoxify the body, which symbolically detoxifies a bad relationship or ordeal. A scalp massage can “wash that man or woman out of the hair.” A facial helps a client put his/her best face forward. Most clients are given the spa treatment as a gift by a concerned family member or friend. Lamar says about half of her clients are men. The “I Will Survive Package” is also popular among clients who are getting over a serious illness (like cancer treatment) or job loss. Some spas are also adding services for technology and work-related problems, like “Blackberry thumb” and “Tech neck.”

Darrell Hair, one of the most controversial umpires in the history of the game, announced yesterday that he is to sue the International Cricket Council and the Pakistan Cricket Board, alleging racial discrimination.
“This does not surprise me,” a former international colleague of the Australian official said last night. “Darrell is a very proud man. He is also a very good umpire and good to stand with, a top bloke who always backs any decision made by his partner. He does everything by the book and knows the book inside out. However, I do think he might do things a little more diplomatically.”
Earlier Hair, speaking in Nairobi after standing in the ICC World Cricket League Division One final between Kenya and Scotland, stated: “I can confirm that I have instructed my lawyers to issue an application to the London Central Employment Tribunal alleging racial discrimination by the International Cricket Council and the Pakistan Cricket Board. Therefore it is inappropriate for me to make further comment given that this matter has yet to be determined by the tribunal.
“I have just umpired a cricket match today, which was the ultimate. The World Cricket League is something that the ICC have really worked on. I think it’s a shame that other things have to overshadow that. It looks like they have - I wish everyone was reporting on the cricket and not this.”
At The Oval in August, the Lincoln-based umpire presided over what was probably the most infamous day’s cricket ever witnessed in Britain. It ended with the abandonment of the fourth and final Test between England and Pakistan.
Pakistan had refused to return after tea because Hair imposed a five-run penalty for ball tampering. Hair removed the bails 12 minutes later, declared that the Test was forfeited, and resisted pleas for a resumption from the ICC’s chief executive Malcolm Speed. Hair’s position was compromised a few days later when it was revealed that he had offered to resign from the ICC in exchange for a payment of US$500,000 (around £253,000).
The ball-tampering allegations were never substantiated and in November the ICC announced that Hair would not be engaged in matches involving Test-playing countries before the end of his contract, in March, 2008. He is still being paid his retainer by the ICC but is losing out on big-match appearance money. Clearly the man who knows all the rules of cricket feels he has a legal point or two to make.
Nasim Ashraf, chairman of the Pakistan board, claimed yesterday that he is “simply outraged” by the news. “This is adding insult to injury,” he added. “Race has nothing to do with this. Mr Hair was removed from the elite panel of umpires by the full ICC board, which has many countries, because of his poor judgment. This is the most preposterous thing I have heard. This is another manifestation of Mr Hair’s mental status.
“It is crass for him to say a black West Indian [Billy Doctrove, the other umpire at The Oval] was let off and he was a white man and therefore he was charged.

“Mr Hair was the senior umpire and he literally took over that Oval cricket match. I was present there. There was only man that evening that did not want cricket to be played. [It was] a black spot on the history of cricket thanks to Mr Hair.”
Hair, at times bluff and overbearing, can convey the impression that he is a particularly officious police constable in the midst of a flannelled rabble; communication with players is not his strong point and Asian countries feel he has been biased against them in the past.
He will never live down what happened at The Oval on that late summer’s day, although there was a sense that he was hung out to dry by the ICC and that the match referee, Mike Procter, the Pakistan captain, Inzamam-ul-Haq, and Doctrove got away relatively lightly for their roles in the sorry affair. Before Hair’s statement from Nairobi, an ICC spokesman declined to comment, saying: “We are in regular communication with Mr Hair and I am not aware of the fact that he is suing us. I only know what I have read on Cricinfo.”
How the Hair saga has unravelled
August 20 Pakistan forfeit the fourth Test against England having refused to play after being penalised five runs when Hair rules that the tourists are guilty of ball-tampering
August 25 The ICC reveals Hair offered to resign in exchange for $500,000. The offer is later withdrawn but the ICC chief executive, Malcolm Speed, feels compelled to make the email public
August 28 The ICC cancels an emergency board meeting to discuss the matter, feeling it unnecessary.
November 4 The ICC confirms Hair will not be engaged for any further full internationals for the remainder of his contract, which runs until March 2008
January 18 Hair officiates for the first time since the Pakistan row in an Associates Tri-Series match between Canada and Scotland in Kenya
February 7 Hair confirms he is to begin legal proceedings against the ICC and the Pakistan Cricket Board, alleging racial discrimination

Hair replacement designer Joseph Paris will be giving private consultations to demonstrate the quality of his custom wigs and hairpieces to potential clients. He will be at the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas on February 19 and 20. Consultations are free, private, and by appointment only.
New York, NY (PRWeb) February 5, 2007 — Custom wig and hairpiece designer, Joseph Paris, will be showing off his latest hair system designs in Las Vegas on February 19 and 20 at the Paris Hotel on the Vegas Strip. While Joseph Paris’s upscale, private salon is located on Madison Avenue in New York City, Joseph Paris designs wigs and hairpieces for private clients, entertainers, and public figures all over the world. The purpose of this trip to Las Vegas is to give private consultations to Vegas natives who are interested in doing something about their hair loss. Appointments can now be booked by phone by calling 1-800-374-4424.
Riding in Cars With Boys
Joseph Paris has designed wigs and hairpieces for actors in such films and TV shows as, “Riding in Cars With Boys,” “Don’t Say A Word,” and “Law & Order: SVU”. He was friend and personal hair stylist to Frank Sinatra and the late King Hassan II of Morocco. His company, Joseph Paris Naturally, has enjoyed a reputation as the finest hair replacement provider to the general public, and was just declared the top man in the field of wigs and hairpieces by the CNBC show, The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch.

“Even though my company has been based on the east coast for the last thirty years, the response to my hair systems has always been tremendous in Las Vegas, where presentation is everything,” says Paris. “What most people who wear hair replacement from other companies don’t understand is that, with the right product, you don’t have to make monthly visits to a hairpiece studio for repair and maintenance.”
Joseph Paris’s custom hair replacement systems are made from the same delicate materials he uses when designing a wig or hairpiece for film or television. “The difference,” Joseph notes, “is that I design them to last, because your life is no one-hour episode or two-hour movie. You have to be able to do everything while wearing my hair system that you would do with your own hair, and I’ve been able to accomplish that with my custom hair system designs.”
